Seyi Akiwowo is the Founder and CEO of Glitch, an award-winning charity dedicated to preventing online abuse, gender-based violence, and hate speech. She is also the author of How to Stay Safe Online (Penguin, 2022), a comprehensive guide to recognizing red flags, responding to abuse, defending yourself online, and using the internet for good.
Seyi’s journey towards creating a safer online environment began when she was elected as a Councillor in East London at the age of 23, becoming the youngest Black woman to hold the position. Motivated by her own experiences with online abuse, she founded Glitch and grew it into Europe’s leading charity focused on online safety for marginalized groups.
As she expanded Glitch from a social enterprise to a medium-sized charity, Seyi earned recognition for her trailblazing leadership, values-driven change-making, and passion for inclusive leadership. In addition to her leadership role at Glitch, Seyi serves on TikTok and Twitter’s European Trust and Safety Council and has been recognized as Digital Leader of the Year in 2019. She has also been featured as one of WIRED’s Global Changemakers and is a Board member of the Multitudes Foundation, supporting changemakers across Europe in reimagining political power.
In Spring 2022, Seyi was offered an MBE in recognition of her work but chose not to accept the honor.
