Colonel Nicole Malachowski (USAF, Retired) made history as the first woman to fly with the USAF Thunderbirds. Throughout her 21-year Air Force career, she accumulated over 2,300 flight hours in six aircraft, including 188 combat hours. She played a vital role in OPERATION DELIBERATE FORGE and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, leading her team on critical missions.
As an F-15E flight commander, instructor pilot, and flight lead, Malachowski took charge during high-stakes operations. In 2005, she led the first fighter formation to secure Iraq’s historic elections, a defining moment in her career. This demonstrated her exceptional leadership in complex situations.
Beyond her combat experience, Malachowski excelled in high-level positions. She served as a White House Fellow in 2008-2009, where she contributed to military family initiatives. At the Pentagon, she took on senior roles, including Executive Director of the White House’s “Joining Forces” initiative. In this capacity, she worked closely with former First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, focusing on the needs of veterans and their families.
Her achievements have earned her recognition in several prestigious halls of fame, including the National Women’s Hall of Fame and the Women in Aviation International Pioneer Hall of Fame.
