BIO

Niall Downey qualified as a doctor from Trinity College Dublin in 1993. He began his medical career in Dublin, where he practiced for two years before moving to Belfast. There he trained as a surgeon and earning his FRCSI in 1997.

He then specialised in cardio-thoracic surgery, working as an SHO at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He later returned to Dublin, taking registrar roles at the National Cardiac Surgery Unit in the Mater Hospital and at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin.

In 1999, Niall made a bold career shift. He retrained as a commercial airline pilot with Aer Lingus, while continuing to work as an Accident & Emergency doctor. For six years, he balanced medicine and aviation, before choosing to focus fully on flying. He flew as a co-pilot on European and Transatlantic routes before qualifying as a captain in 2010. Today, he flies the Airbus A330 out of Manchester on Aer Lingus’s long-haul routes.

Blending insights from both careers, Niall founded Frameworkhealth Ltd in 2011. His goal was to adapt aviation-style safety training for healthcare settings. Over time, the initiative evolved into Framework Safety Group Ltd, which helps industries—especially healthcare—reduce adverse events by applying principles from aviation’s Safety Management System. Rather than blaming individuals for errors, Niall advocates for systemic analysis and culture change.

His work focuses on promoting a “Just Culture” in high-pressure environments. He encourages organisations to embed Human Factors thinking and create systems where staff, patients, and families feel empowered to speak up. He believes that while technology and systems have evolved rapidly, the human brain hasn’t kept pace—so systems must adapt to protect people. Niall shares these ideas widely, speaking at local, national, and international conferences.

Before aviation and healthcare, sport played a major role in Niall’s life. He raced competitively as a cyclist for over a decade, including pro-am international events in the early 1990s. He was part of Northern Ireland’s Commonwealth Games panel, and later served as Medical Officer for the Federation of Irish Cyclists and the Ulster Cycling Federation. For six years, he also worked as a Race Doctor at international cycling events.

In 2023, Niall published Oops! Why Things Go Wrong. The book examines how errors happen across industries and society—and, more importantly, how to prevent them through systems thinking and cultural change.
